Although as a genre, ambient relies on repetitive themes and variations upon such a theme, this album feels like it relies too heavily upon the repetitive element of electronic music. I found the album to be a decent effort, but somewhat unoriginal. The second track, Dekmaster, featuring wind flute rhythms, is a little too cutesy and reminded me a little of videogame music, but not in a good way.
Encode the chill out: interesting percussive piece, bit confusing in one place but it settled down. Dekmaster much more engaging, would actually get away with this as a party piece if it were longer... would depend what kind of party maybe, but hey!-) I liked the sound, and the percussion felt less harsh. Track three, which I think has been superbly done with No Hope... presents us perhaps with the acorn from which that sturdy oak of tone came? Then after that, there was The After, which I think is minimalism well done. Now I've often made the query whether minimalism is almost a laziness, but I think you can have that 'element' of artists who are formulaic in their work in any genre and are just being lazy and hoping for the best. However, there are minimalist artists, and I'm particularly interested in the electronic version at the moment, who seem to me to be making music earnestly in this category. I could spout a few names but if you are interested in this particular genre take a look at my profile and wade through the morass of words I type. There is always cheap crap wherever you go it seems these days, I try to rely on my intuition and watching for patterns and interaction. I think Thalyla is one of those artists who are genuinely striving to achieve a good end-product musically, because, due to a disproportionate fascination with the same thing e.g. mainstream music, hard to see as easily marketable. I know that sounds at least paradoxical if not verging on sounding hypocritical. Unfortunately, its no longer the fittest that survive, but the most marketable. This forum enables freedom from that array of rubbish we are generally presented with, like a breath of fresh air. Cheers!-)
First track is about as minimal synthetic drumming can get and it works well. Track two is only slightly more complex and introducing melodies. Tracks three and four are a more modern sounding, but still simplistic.
