Almost every band bio I’ve ever read was written in the third person. I guess even if you write your own bio you’re supposed to do that, so when you start talking about how original and cool your music is it doesn’t sound like you’re just having an ego trip. I tried writing a third-person band bio, but it didn’t work for me. I was pretending to be some neutral observer talking about my sound and my history when that wasn’t anywhere near true. It wasn’t genuine.

I’ve always tried to be about genuineness. That’s where I start when I write a song. I just write what’s in my heart and don’t try to dress it up with fancy rhymes and complicated metaphors. Not that there’s anything wrong with those things, but I think there’s an element of poetry and beauty in heart-on-the-sleeve honesty. I’ve made it a goal never to write a word I don’t mean, and I feel like, for the most part, I’ve been achieving that goal.

I’m a self-taught musician. That partly means I never had the money to go to lessons, but mostly it means I’ve been too lazy to learn music on anyone’s time but my own. Thanks to modern music technology, I haven’t had to be a fantastic musician. I just have to understand a little bit of music theory. I use GarageBand on my MacBook and program all my music with the MIDI instruments provided on there. I’ve been blown away by how much you can do with so little.

This project for me has been both a musical journey and a spiritual one. With each song I write, I learn more about music as I work out my own personal faith. To those of you who have joined me on that journey, thank you.
