The Sacred Datura is an experimental musical effort that started in the summer of 2004 when visual artist Daniel Stanfield approached Brandon O'Brien, whose noisy punk rock band Mantra had recently broken up, and said "Let's make some noise!" Daniel purchased a drum machineand the two immediately began recording noisy, minimalist experimental songs on a four track cassette machine using the drum machine, a guitar, and whatever else they could find that could make noise. As time went on they collected more instruments and effects as well as a massive amount of recordings until the 4 track died in April of 2005. The Four Track Recordings is a document of this period, showcasing 18 tracks out of the hundreds of songs recorded during this period.
After the death of the four track they began recording on a computer, which was a new experiment for the band. They were no longer confined to using a maximum of four tracks, and during a weekend of recreational fun they started work on the HIFIFETAMINE EP, recording for an entire weekend nonstop. By the end of the summer, they had finished the EP.
Shortly after the recording was finished the band acquired the proper amplification to begin playing live shows and began doing so as often as possible, mostly playing in either parks or house shows. They also began frequently recording their improvisations, resulting in numerous sessions.
