Porpoise are a band based in Stourbridge, West Midlands who formed in January 2007 after their previous bands burst into flames. Their new project consists of Dave Halama (Vocals & Guitar), Pete Stanley (Vocals & Guitar), Jon Behrendt (Bass & Vocals) and Gaz McCabe (Drums). They recorded their first demo, the imaginatively titled III (due to the fact there were three tracks, duh) live, choosing to mic everything up and record straight to tape with Timothy Parkes at The Katie Fitzgerald’s pub. The band made their debut at the same venue and received some great support and feedback from the crowd. They have gone on to play a series of live shows across the Midlands.
March 2008 sees the band putting the final touches to their first proper recording session. Their Zooso EP was recorded again with good friend Timothy Parkes in lounges, bedrooms and backrooms using gear they purchased themselves rather than opt for the money draining option of studio time. This has given them not only an excellent sound but a spring board to produce their own music in their own time without the outside pressures & expectations. Zooso is currently being mixed and mastered by Tim Parkes. The band are readying it for release this month (May 08).
The band have many influences which hopefully come across through the music. Mainly their love of Queen, David Bowie, Thin Lizzy, Mastodon, Guided By Voices & Jawbox drives their sound. Porpoise have been described by Punktastic.com as “Oddly Entertaining” which was seen as compliment on the bands terms. Their songs on first glance may have funny titles, dog barks and loud guitars but there is a depth beyond the surface. Their love of pop songs and rock music makes for interesting listening. If you don’t get it, you don’t get it. It really doesn’t matter. Porpoise make music for fun, that fun drives what they do. How can you be jaded and miserable if you are making your own music and playing it to unsuspecting ears?
