This 11-piece ensemble plays an eclectic repertoire that combines the rich musical history of the circus and the vagabond peoples of Europe with the raw energy of avant-garde jazz and the irreverence and fun of today's Vaudeville for a sound that is somehow familiar yet like no other.

Ich weiß nicht, wann ich das letzte Mal im Zirkus war. Irgendwann vor meinem zehnten Geburtstag muss das gewesen sein. Aber eines ist mir neben den ganzen Tieren und dem riesigen Zelt in Erinnerung geblieben: die Musik. Trommelwirbel, Flötentöne und jede Menge Blechbläser, wenn es das Programm erforderte.
Was die Kapelle damals gespielt hat, weiß ich nicht mehr. Doch sicherlich war es nicht so ein Programm, wie es Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band macht. Wenn wann sich als Kapelle des Emperor Norton I. (Joshua Abraham Norton 1819-1880) betrachtet, dann steht man für ein ganzes Stück Verrücktheit auch in der Musik.
Aber vielleicht ist hier erst mal ein kleiner Ausflug in die Geschichte Kaliforniens angesagt. Wo anders wäre jemand wie Norton wahrscheinlich sofort in der Irrenanstalt gelandet. Nachdem er sein Vermögen bei einer Spekulation mit peruanischem Reis verloren hatte, verfiel der Geschäftsmann Joshua Norton offensichtlich dem Wahnsinn. Anders kann man es kaum verstehen, dass er sich 1859 selbst zum Kaiser der Vereinigten Staaten und Schutzherrn von Mexiko proklamierte. Die Bewohner Kaliforniens fanden den Exzentriker wegen seines Humors und seiner "kaiserlichen Erlasse" äußerst amüsant. So forderte er etwa die gewaltsame Auflösung des US-Kongresses. Allerdings kümmerten sich weder die Armee noch der Kongress um die Existenz des kaiserlichen Befehls. Auch nach seinem Tod ist dieser einzige amerikanische Kaiser nicht in Vergessenheit geraten. Mark Twain hat nach ihm die Figur des Königs in Huckleberry Finn gestaltet. Und auch im Comic hat er seine Spuren hinterlassen: Das Lucky-Luke-Heft "Der Kaiser von Amerika" widmet sich dem Treiben dieses Verrückten.
Norton I., so die Meinung der Band, habe vor seinem Dahingehen seinen Anhängern offenbart, er sei kein normaler Sterblicher, sondern statt dessen eine Manifestation der absurden und ungewöhnlichen Kräfte des Universums. Und in diesem Sinne versuchen die Musiker auch die absurdesten Kombinationen zum Klingen zu bringen. Der Hörer kann sich also auf Zirkusmusik und Free Jazz genauso gefasst machen wie auf Gypsy Brass und simplen Klamauk. Zu deutsch gesagt: Spontan und lustvoll muss es zugehen auf der Bühne, um seinem Kaiser gerecht zu werden. Und vor allem leidenschaftlich und ohne Angst, sich lächerlich zu machen. Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist die Live-Aufnahme, die die Norton's Stationary Marching Band in der Nave Gallery in Somerville gemacht hat. Ein wunderbarer Spaß ist das.

I just finished watching King Kong, and was inspired to investigate Vaudeville music, hence my discovery of this band. I can see the boxing ballerinas, the tap dancing brothers, the jugglers and the rich decadence of the Vaudeville scene in my mind as I listen to this evocative music. Brilliant! The live recording of the music only adds to the sense of being there!
