of How the Bird of Falling Stars Helped the Hunter

to Get the Tusk of the Walrus Shapeshifter

The Bird of Falling Stars ( Tale-Teller's Introductory ) flew in the night sky and saw the Hunter below thinking his sad thoughts ( Sad Thoughts of a Hunter ). The Hunter was thinking if he could fight the great Walrus for his Tusk, and if he could overcome the mountains and perform this heroic deed. The Bird took pity over the Hunter and it took him in its sharp claws, then it carried him over the dawn and the morning dew ( Flight of a Hunter and a Bird ). It took the Hunter over the high mountains into the Lands of the Walrus Shapeshifter. But just when the Bird rose over the mountain tops, the sky grew darker and the thunderstorm came ( Meeting the Thunderstorm ). The lightning struck the Bird and couldn't hold the Hunter in its claws anymore.

The Hunter fell to the ground and kept on his way alone ( Hunter in the Rain ).

The Hunter was lost, he came into the swamplands, and there he met a Frog. And the Hunter had a talk with the Frog ( Talking to a Frog ). The Hunter asked the Frog where he could find the lands of the Walrus Shapeshifter. And the Frog replied that the Hunter should go through the far-away Forest. The Hunter didn't know that the Walrus changed into the Frog and sent him towards the most dangerous path. The midday was hot and the Hunter was walking in the forest ( Fight at the Forest at Midday ), and the beasts of the Forest attacked him from everywhere, for they needed to protect the path to the lands of the Walrus Shapeshifter. The Hunter fought them back and kept on his path. He came through the forest, but he got very tired. He layed on the ground and fell fast asleep.

And then the Walrus Shapeshifter came to him in his dream ( Hunter's Uneasy Dream ).

"Do not tread into my Ice Lands, I shall destroy you, Hunter, and I shall imprison you under the ice", - the Walrus warned. The Walrus tried to scare the Hunter away, but then the Hunter awoke and saw the Horse nearby. He convinced the Horse to help him to get into the Ice Lands. Then the Hunter rode the Horse into the Ice Lands ( Hunter Rides a Horse ). The way was long. The snow started to fall and it got cold - they got into the Lands of the Walrus. ( Ice Lands of the Walrus ) The Hunter leff the Horse behind and kept on his path alone over the endless frozen sea. He was walking on ice and the ice crackled under his feet, then parted into the ice floes. But the Hunter just kept on jumping from an ice floe to an ice floe ( Hunter Jumps from an Ice Floe to an Ice Floe ), further and further.

Then the Hunter came to the place where the ice ended, and started challenging the Walrus to come out and fight him ( Hunter Challenges a Walrus to Fight Him ). The Birds flew around the Hunter and struck him with their beaks. The Fish came out and started pushing the Hunter off the ice. The Fish told him not to call the Walrus, because a human should not call the Walrus, a human should not challenge the Walrus to get his Tusk. But the Hunter didn't listen. The Fish were showing their sharp teech and they were glancing at the Hunter in a scary way. But the Hunter was not scared. The Birds were flapping their wings, shrieking at the Hunter, trying to hit him in the eyes and other softer spots with their beaks. But the Hunter fights back, he twisted and he turned, and he kept calling the Walrus. So strong and brave is the Hunter.

He won the fight with the Birds and the Fish with his stubbornness and his insolence. The Birds and the Fish decided not to deal with him anymore, and the Hunter got very angry, and started to rage. He stomped with his feet on the ice ( Hunter Makes Much Noise) , whistled, made very loud noises of all kinds. "Get out", - he cried, - "or I shall break your ice into pieces and throw it onto the Sun itself."  The Walrus got a bad headache from all that noise, and his eyes goot blood-shot, and his heart-beat got wild. He got very angry with the Hunter and plunged the ices with its huge head. Then the Hunter and the Walrus started fighting ( Walrus and Hunter Fight Like Samurai ), not for the dear life, but for the Tusk. They fought for a long time. The Walrus tried and tried to get the Hunter with his Tusks, but the Hunter dodged him and fought back. They fought long and with much zeal! Even the ice began melting because of this fight. But then the Walrus got annoyed with the Hunter and the Great Beast dove back into the depth of the water. But the Hunter managed to twist, and turn, and knock the Walrus's great Tusk with a piece of ice. The Hunter took the Tusk and was very happy. And the Walrus got so tired of the people, so he did not return.

The Hunter then left the Ice Lands. The Bird of Falling Stars picked him up on the way back, and brought him home ( The Сlosing Speech of the Walrus-Tale-Teller ). And the Hunter rejoiced with his great prey. And the Bird grew cautious and it does not answer every single call, it hears. As for the Walruses, they have little liking of the people since those days.

как Птица-Звездопад помогла Охотнику
добыть клык Моржа-Оборотня

Летела Птица-Звездопад ( Tale-Teller's Introductory ) по ночному небу да заметила, как внизу на земле Охотник печалится ( Sad Thoughts of a Hunter ). «Пошел бы, - думает, - с Моржом Оборотнем биться за клык его, да как самому горы одолеть и подвиг свершить?». Сжалилась над ним Птица, подхватила Охотника когтями цепкими да понесла на рассвете, над утренней росой ( Flight of a Hunter and a Bird ), через далекие горы - в царство Моржа-Оборотня. Но только поднялись над вершинами - нахмурилось небо над ними, дождь пошел, да разразилась гроза ( Meeting the Thunderstorm ). Ударила молния в Птицу, и не удержала она Охотника в когтях.

Упал Охотник на землю и отправился дальше под дождем в одиночку ( Hunter in the Rain ).

Заплутал Охотник, забрел в болото да встретил Лягушку. И был разговор с Лягушкой ( Talking to a Frog ), спрашивал Охотник: «Где царство Моржа оборотня отыскать?». Отвечала Лягушка: «Иди далеко сквозь лес». Не знал Охотник, что Морж-то Лягушкой и обернулся, да и отправил его на опасный путь. Идет Охотник в полуденную жару по лесу ( Fight at the Forest at Midday ), а на него отовсюду звери идут, нападают да подступы к царству Моржа-Оборотня защищают.

А Охотник отбивается да только дальше идет. Вышел из лесу, но устал совсем. На землю лег да заснул.

И пришел к нему во сне Морж-Оборотень ( Hunter's Uneasy Dream ).

«Не ходи, - говорит, - в царство мое леденое, погублю тебя, Охотник, да под лед навеки заточу». Запугивал Морж человека, да проснулся вдруг Охотник и увидел, что рядом лошадь бродит. Уговорил ее помочь до царства ледяного добраться, оседлал, да поскакал в ледяное царство ( Hunter Rides a Horse ). Долго ехали. Снег пошел, холодать стало - добрались до земель Моржа ( Ice Lands of the Walrus ). Оставил Охотник лошадь и отправился дальше без нее по бескрайнему заледенелому морю. Идет по льду, лед трещит под Охотником, льдинами расходится. А Охотник знай да прыгает с льдины на льдину ( Hunter Jumps from an Ice Floe to an Ice Floe ), все дальше пробирается. Дошел до места, где лед кончился, и стал Моржа на бой звать ( Hunter Challenges a Walrus to Fight Him ). Птицы слетелись над Охотником, клевать его стали. Рыбы повыныривали, стали Охотника со льда сталкивать. «Не зови Моржа, нельзя человеку Моржа-Оборотня звать, нельзя человеку с ним за клык биться!», - говорят Охотнику рыбы. А Охотник не слушает. Рыбы зубы острые скалят, смотрят на него глазами страшно-престрашно. А Охотник не боится. Птицы крыльями машут, кричат на Охотника, клювами в глаза и во всякие мечта болезные метят. А Охотник отбивается, уворачивается, продолжает Моржа звать. Силен Охотник!

Наглостью да упертостью противников взял. Не стали с ним больше птицы и рыбы связываться, а Охотник осерчал совсем и разошелся не на шутку. Буйствовать начал. Ногой об лед топает ( Hunter Makes Much Noise ), свистит громко шумит по-всякому. «Выходи, - кричит, - а то льды твои по кусочкам разберу, да на самое солнце закину». У Моржа от шума голова совсем разболелась, глаза кровью налились, сердце сильнее прежнего заколотилось. Рассердился на Охотника, да и вынырнул из моря, головой стопудовой лед пробив. И стали биться Морж-Оборотень с Охотником ( Walrus and Hunter Fight Like Samurai ), не на жизнь, а на клык. Долго бились, Морж все клыками своими Охотника задеть пытается, а Охотник знай уворачивается да на Моржа нападает. Долго бились, с жаром бились! Лед от той битвы таять начал. Но опостылел Моржу Охотник, да и нырнул великий зверь обратно. Да успел все ж извернуться Охотник и льдиной клык Моржу выбить. Забрал его себе - и радуется. А Морж так от людей устал, что и возвращаться не стал.

Ушел после и Охотник со льдов. Забрала его по дороге Птица-Звездопад, унесла обратно ( The Сlosing Speech of the Walrus-Tale-Teller ). Сидит Охотник теперь и добыче не нарадуется. А Птица больше на каждую просьбу не откликается. Что же до моржей, то они с тех пор людей недолюбливают.

На том и сказанию конец.
А поведал я его так, как сам от моржей слышал.
