With the release of the “Magnolia Soul” EP, Seth Power brings a fresh feel to some classic genres. Lush with addicting progressions and guitar work, an edgy but soulful vocal approach, and persistent rock undertones, the record boasts the aesthetic of Soul Pop anthems. Although the songs are diverse from one another, there is a glue that holds them all together much like a concept album would. Most importantly, the album never loses sight of the emotional platform great songs are built from.
The first single, “Fire”, is a smooth, passionate, soul pop classic. Complete with a songwriting style reminiscent of 1960’s doo wop, loads of musical hooks, and a strong chorus, the song seems to breathe as it plays on.
“The theme of the song revolves around the comparison I’m making between fire and this girl. The first line of the chorus says, ‘Girl, you’re so fire!’ I’m playing off the slang version of the word while also drawing a metaphorical comparison between her and fire. Fire is a visually hypnotic phenomenon. It’s unpredictable in its movement. It provides light and warmth. It dances around and lights up the dark. I’m trying to describe my infatuation for this girl by drawing that comparison between her and something that would seem to be completely non-related.” explains the songwriter of his single.
Although the single does speak volumes for the EP, to get a real understanding for where Power is coming from, it should be heard in its entirety.
“’Magnolia Soul’ definitely shows a LOT of growth in a short amount of time. Not only did the sonic quality of the songs increase dramatically but also the maturity of the subject material. I also feel like the dynamics of the music and the instrumentation I used show a lot of growth for me as a musician, songwriter and recording artist. The beauty of the digital age is that we have access to all of the music that has been made over the last 50-60 years. I love so many different types of music, particularly old school Rock N’Roll and R&B. ‘Fire’ allowed me to combine those old school styles with a modern singer/songwriter pop feel and create a unique fusion of the old and the new.” says Power of his songwriting approach for the EP and single.
Having a love for music from a young age, songwriter Seth Power began playing piano at the age of only 8 years old, followed with guitar at the age of 10. It was around 14 when he started writing and recording his own music and his passion grew from there. The next year, Power began playing open mics and continued gigging through his college years as his primary source of income. Spending a short time working straight out of college, he quickly realized his need to follow his dream. He quit his job and began to pursue music wholeheartedly. In 2016 Power released an EP in collaboration with a young female artist and played the role of writer/producer for the project. All those long hours in the studio writing and recording provided him a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw upon while crafting his latest release, "Magnolia Soul." The record is a true testament to where Power is at with his music right now.
Playing alongside acts like Babyface, T-Pain, and Bobby Rush, as well as opening for artist Leon Russell, Power is certainly not new to spreading the music through live performance.
“Magnolia Soul” is now available for download on most major digital outlets and the artist has since put together a band he dubbed “Seth Power & The Part-Timers”. The band has been focusing on gigging in major college towns around MS, and is planning a small tour for this fall throughout MS in support of the release.
