Frame drum is an ancient percussion instrument associated with the culture of Fertile Crescent where agriculture began 12,000 years ago. Frame drum traveled with wheat and beans from Middle East into North Africa, Central Asia, India ad Europe. A multitude of regional styles of frame drum arose: from an Italian tamborine to Irish bodhrán to South Indian kanjira. In many traditional cultures frame drums are still played by women at special events.
Incidentals play a fusion of Middle Eastern rhythms and world folk songs, with predominance of Slavic traditional songs on their repertoire. Oxana learnt frame drum from Layne Redmond's teaching materials and founded Todmorden Frame Drum group, which brings Layne's vision of women reclaiming their spirituality through frame drumming into life.
